There are several museums in Kiev, Ukraine on topics ranging from art to history, transport, and religion. They constitute an important aspect of Kiev's focus on knowledge, culture, and history. ==Art museums== The National Art Museum of Ukraine is dedicated to Ukrainian art. Built in the 19th century, the museum has the appearance of a Greek temple. Earlier, it was the Museum of History which had artifacts of the past. Following the nationalization of artwork in the Soviet Union the museum came to possess a large collection of artwork. The exhibits are displayed in 21 galleries, representing iconographic and sculptural objects of Ukraine, alongside paintings by artists such as Taras Shevchenko, Kyriak Kostandi, and M. Pymonenko. Artifacts in the museum include the Medieval arts (from the 14th to 19th centuries), Romantic art of the 18th-19th centuries with some sketch works of Shevchenko, paintings of the socialist era of the Soviet union, and posters of the Revolutionary period. The museum also houses the pre-19th century wooden icon of the "Last Judgment", which was earlier in the St. Michael Monastery in Kiev. The small icon of Saint George which was located in the store room of the Mariupol museum was restored by L.H.Chlenova and I.P. Dorofuenko and transferred to the Kiev museum, supervised by Nikolai V.Pertsev who was also involved in the initial restoration of the museum. When the icon was found, its silver covering was missing and it was in a poor condition. The Museum of Ukrainian folk art depicts the country's folk decorative art. It is located in Pyrohovo and has 300 exhibits, with displays consisting of churches, barns, windmills, huts, and craft exhibits. Guides dressed in typical village costumes of the region explain the various aspects of village crafts and lifestyles. The Museum of Western and Oriental Art, also known as the Museum of Art of Bogdan and Varvara Khanenko, is a treasure house of artifacts, not only from Ukraine, but also of foreign art from many other countries. The artifacts in the museum consist of a few pieces of ceramics dated to the 9th to 13th and 19th to 20th centuries, apart from antiquaries of glazed tiles belonging to the 14th to 17th centuries. There are some bronzes and embroidery work. In the western wing of the museum among the rare Byzantine antiquaries there is also an impressive painting of Hieronymus Bosch's Temptation of St Anthony. There are four unique religious artifacts dated to the 6th and 7th centuries on the top floor, and it has items of Greek sculpture. The eastern wing of the museum has exhibits of art related to Buddhism and Islam and also Chinese culture. The building gives an impression of a bourgeois mansion, with post-Renaissance, Western European paintings and portraits by notable artists like Rubens, David, Reynolds and Velsquez. The architecture of the building itself is museum worthy and the furniture in the museum are also considered to be pieces of art. A sixth-century icon of prominence in the museum is that of the Saints Sergios and Bakchos, which was brought from the Saint Catherine's Monastery on Mount Sinai by Bishop Uspensky. The Pinchuk Art Centre is a museum dedicated to the Eastern European art and culture and is privately owned by Viktor Pinchuk. It is also an international center for displaying contemporary art. The Ivan Honchar Museum was established in Kiev in September 1993 to exhibit the personal collection of Ivan Makarovych Honchar to promote national culture, with emphasis on Ukrainian art and ethnography. The Mystetskyi Arsenal is an art exhibition space in a huge building with eight metre high vaulted ceilings.
